IN THIS EPISODE Welcome to the Ladies Dish

Updates (1:26):

Kate & Joy’s 21DSD Group starts October 10th with a prep week beginning October 3rd. Join us to detox from sugar while all of the Halloween candy is around… may be a good way to you stay away from that candy bowl at work too! Visit bit.ly/spooksandspice to sign up! Limited spots available.

In an episode all about poop last week and we totally forgot to talk about the squatty potty! The squatting position actually helps our bodies because it properly aligns the colon for easier passing of bowel movements. Check out the Squatty Potty here for an amazingly hilarious commercial.

It’s actually a great product but you could also use a small step stool or box that you already have instead for the same effect. You just want your knees above your hips!

Interview Game Question (4:55)

In episodes 42 we talked about signature colors and mentioned we would discuss favorite scents or smells! So this week, our interview game question is just that - what’s your favorite scent?!

What’s Cookin’? (8:57) This week Dana shares a non-food recipe: Foot Reflexology! Dana wants you to try food reflexology which is so awesome in her world – especially for pregnancy. But EVERYONE should try it!

LDP's Sponsor - The Nutritional Therapy Association The NTA is an amazing organization that certified all three LDP co-hosts as Nutritional Therapy Consultants. We all highly recommend the NTC course or NTP (Nutritional Therapy Practitioner) course to anyone interested in pursuing an education in holistic health and learning how real, whole foods help heal the body from the inside out. Today’s Topic: Love Your Liver (12:22)

Check out this awesome TedEx video for a brief animation on what the liver does in your body….24 hours a day! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbh3SjzydnQ

What the liver does…. -Filter the body’s blood from the heart and the intestines -Processes and sorts nutrients from our food -Stores sugar/glucose for energy later - also stores other vitamins and minerals for later use, too! -Eliminates toxins through kidneys and intestines to be excreted -Forms proteins and cholesterols, vitamin D and critical enzymes for digestion -Produces bile to aid in fat digestion and toxin elimination

We’re bombarded by toxins every single day. What that means is that we have overloaded liver pathways. When our liver is overloaded and unhappy toxins and other metabolic waste (like used hormones) don’t get eliminated and they just keep recirculating within your body.

Why support the liver? (16:52) Improved liver function and open detox pathways can do amazing things for your health. Here are just a few things:

• Increased energy levels • Clearer skin • More regular menstrual cycle with reduced PMS • Freedom from sinus pain • Fewer infections and stronger immunity • Less digestive complaints and more regularity • Fresher breath and oral health • A positive mood and sharper mind

Possible Signs and Symptoms (18:10)

Since the liver is involved with so many of the body’s functions, it can be at the root of many health problems. Problems as diverse as PMS, fatigue, insomnia, arthritis and migraine headache may respond to proper liver support. Other symptoms include the following: -Pain between shoulder blades - Stomach upset by greasy foods -Nausea -Light or clay colored stools -Dry skin, itchy feet or skin peels on feet -Headache over eyes -Gallbladder attacks, gallbladder removed -Easily hung over if you were to drink wine (0=no, 1=yes) -Sensitive to chemicals (perfume, cleaning agents, etc.) -Exposure to diesel fumes -Pain under right side of rib cage -Hemorrhoids or varicose veins SO HOW DO WE SUPPORT THE LIVER and our other Detox Organs? (19:41)

First of all, let’s define detoxing - because a lot of people tend to have skewed ideas of what this means because of all of the things we’ve seen celebrities do. What we’re talking about is supporting your detox pathways with real, whole foods and not the flushes and cleanses where you spend 20 hours in the bathroom.

1. Reduce Inflammation and eliminate food intolerances. A low-sugar, low-toxin diet that’s filled with high-fiber foods is crucial for supporting your liver. High amounts of antioxidants and fiber can even reverse liver damage and disease. a. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods for liver function include i. Sour foods ii. Leafy greens iii. Cruciferous veggies and iv. Fresh herbs v. High-antioxidant fruits vi. Local raw honey vii. Green tea viii. Coconut oil ix. Apple cider vinegar

Foods to avoid (28:40)

• too much alcohol or caffeine • packaged goods that contain refined vegetable oils, artificial ingredients, sweeteners and colors • fruits and vegetables heavily sprayed with chemical pesticides and herbicides (non-organic crops) • factory-farmed animal products, farm-raised fish or conventional dairy (that has been pasteurized and homogenized) • sugary drinks and snacks • refined grains 2. Choose Organic Crops and Grass-Fed, Cage-Free and Wild Animal Foods 3. Use Liver-Boosting Supplements Several powerful herbs known to give the liver a boost in converting nutrients and removing toxins are: • Milk thistle • Holy basil • Dandelion root These herbal supplements help the liver properly metabolize foods, eliminate waste and even balance hormones. Milk thistle is an excellent source of the antioxidant called silymarin, which prevents depletion of glutathione in the liver and also fights liver disease. Holy basil contains essential oils that help combat bacteria, heavy metals and even strains of fungus. To date, at least six different beneficial essential oils have been identified in holy basil. Dandelion root (yes the same kind found in your yard that you might consider a weed!) has a natural diuretic effect. This means it helps balance fluid levels and boosts the liver’s efforts to quickly eliminate toxins, strengthening the immune system, helping with blood sugar balance and relieving indigestion. 4. Reduce Stress

5. Move your body

6. Castor Oil Pack
